Genetic Testing is the analysis of your DNA. If you wish to establish your risk of developing a particular hereditary disease or condition, genetic testing can help you understand and manage this risk

By using a sample of saliva, it is possible to establish if you have gene mutations which are associated with an increased risk of particular diseases.

IGP offers a genetic test to help identify whether you are at an increased risk of developing common hereditary heart conditions. This means you can take control of your healthcare to detect any problems at an early stage, when they are most treatable.

The genetic cardiac test analyses 77 genes related to inherited cardiovascular conditions that, if detected early, may have effective interventions and preventive measures. This can identify conditions such as high cholesterol, that may be evaluated and treated differently from conditions without a genetic cause.

The test covers:

  • Cardiomyopathies: Disease of the heart muscle
  • Arrhythmias: Disease of the heart rhythm
  • Aortopathies: Disease of the aorta
  • Familial Hypercholesterolemia: Inherited high cholesterol disorder
  • Thrombophilia: Abnormal tendency to develop blood clots

There are obvious benefits to be obtained from the testing whatever the outcome.

A negative result can stop unnecessary worrying and enable informed decisions to be made about your future healthcare, potentially avoiding unnecessary blood testing and scans. Although it doesn’t guarantee that you won’t develop any of these disorders in your lifetime.

However, when results are positive, further screening can detect the future onset of any disease at an early stage - enabling access to prompt treatment to improve the chance of recovery; and ultimately, survival.
